MLB test of robot umpires for checked swing calls moving up to Triple-A
MLB's robot umpire system expands to Triple-A, using a 45-degree swing threshold and testing rule changes to improve accuracy and reduce strikeouts by 3%, officials said.
- Major League Baseball is expanding its checked swing challenge system to the Triple-A International League and Triple-A Pacific Coast League, according to a memorandum sent to teams last week.
- MLB vice president of on-field strategy Joe Martinez confirmed a swing occurs if the bat head angle exceeds 45 degrees, a standard the league previously tested in the Single-A Florida State League and Arizona Fall League.
- League officials will also test moving second base 9 inches to position it "entirely within the perimeter of the infield diamond during the second half" of the season, reducing base path distances.
- Starting pitchers at the lowest minor league levels may re-enter games if they threw at least 25 pitches before removal, while officials reduced permitted pitcher disengagements to tighten game pace.
- These experiments are not expected to lead to immediate MLB implementation but are being considered for the minors to improve player development, building on Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System tests that began in 2019.
