MLA urges Ottawa to reconsider shutdown of Lacombe research centre
Johnson says closing the 119-year-old centre would erase more than 100 jobs and weaken agricultural research for Central Alberta producers.
Lacombe-Ponoka MLA Jennifer Johnson urged the federal government last week to reverse the closure of the 119-year-old Lacombe Research and Development Centre, citing its vital importance to Central Alberta's agricultural community.
Federal officials initiated the closure as part of a mandate to cut about 40,000 public service jobs, despite the facility hosting more than $5 million in applied research projects focused on livestock and sustainable farming.
A House of Commons standing committee recommended the government "pause and reverse" the decision, warning that dismantling specialized facilities like the research abattoir would cause significant scientific loss.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada maintains a reversal is impractical, though local task force members are discussing potential partnerships with the University of Alberta, Western Crop Innovations, and Results Driven Agriculture Research.
The government continues phasing out positions for more than 100 researchers and staff, with the facility slated for closure early next year, leaving stakeholders focused on transferring essential assets and knowledge.
