Missouri Democrats gain ground in polls, but congressional races remain uphill battles
Democrats gained on the generic ballot, but fundraising and district maps still favor Republicans in most races, analysts said.
An August St. Louis University/YouGov survey showed Missourians evenly split on a generic congressional ballot, marking a major gain for Democrats from February polling. Republicans nonetheless retain a strong advantage in most districts heading into the November 3 election.
Following a September 3 ruling from the Missouri Supreme Court, affirmed three times by the U.S. Supreme Court, the state finalized election boundaries after a referendum campaign successfully blocked the 2025 redistricting map from the November 3 ballot.
In the competitive 2nd District, incumbent U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner spent $2.4 million defending her seat from mid-July through September 30. Challenger Fred Wellman outraised Wagner by more than $200,000 but was outspent by an almost 6-to-1 margin.
Outside the 2nd District, most races remain rated 'solid' for the incumbent party, according to Cook Political Report. Democratic voters concentrate mainly in the 1st and 5th districts, limiting the party's ability to translate statewide gains into broader congressional victories.
Translating statewide momentum into congressional success requires winning back rural voters who abandoned the party over the past two decades. Democrats face significant hurdles overcoming the GOP's dominance in the state's remaining six districts before November 3.
