Missoula County Fire Danger Raised to Moderate as Burning Stays Open
Warmer temperatures and dry vegetation prompted the change, and officials said campfires should stay small and be fully extinguished.
The Missoula County Fire Protection Association raised fire danger in Missoula County to moderate effective immediately due to rising temperatures and drying vegetation.
Despite recent rain, vegetation remains dry and warm temperatures have increased conditions, says Betsy Pickhardt, Community Preparedness and Fire Prevention Specialist for the Southwestern Land Office DNRC.
Outdoor burning, including the General, Essential Agriculture, and Prescribed Wildland Outdoor Burning seasons, remains open in Missoula County despite the elevated danger level.
Anyone planning to burn must activate their permit on the day of use and maintain adequate personnel, water, and equipment until fires are cold to the touch.
Fires can spread quickly in dry grass on windy days, so residents should follow the MCFPA Facebook page and website for current burning conditions and forecasts.
