Missing University of Maryland Student Found Safe
Police said the 22-year-old was reunited with his family after a community search and a public appeal from relatives.
On Wednesday, University of Maryland student Dilan Ashar, 22, was found safe after going missing on October 2 at the Terrapin Trail Parking Garage. The discovery ended a multi-day search across campus.
Campus police and Prince George's County police launched a critical search after security footage showed Ashar at the garage at 2:30 a.m. on October 2. Detectives immediately responded to the scene.
Nearly 50 personnel and nine dogs searched an 110-acre area around the garage, while officers deployed drones and K-9 units for aerial and ground tracking. Posters were displayed across campus.
Ashar has been reunited with his family, the university confirmed Wednesday evening. "Thanks to the immense efforts of UMPD and our entire community, Dilan has been reunited with his family," the university said.
The university is providing resources for students processing the situation, including the University Counseling Center and the Faculty Staff Assistance Program. Police have not released specific details about where he was found or the circumstances.
