Minnesota nurse uses Spanish skills to rescue hiker who was lost for days
Her Spanish helped her reassure the lost hiker and confirm he was unhurt before volunteers brought him to safety.
Minnesota nurse Erin Strachan rescued a hiker named Luis at Devils Fork State Park in South Carolina in February after hearing his whistle during a loon count volunteer mission.
Growing up in Texas, Strachan developed Spanish fluency through high school courses and immersive programming at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota, where she now works as a nurse.
Realizing the man spoke Spanish, Strachan determined Luis had been lost for five days and provided food, water, and a portable charger before transporting him to safety.
The boat crew transported Luis to the park's information center, where he contacted his family; Strachan credited her Spanish ability as the critical factor enabling the rescue.
This experience highlights language education's impact; Strachan's work at Concordia exposes her to diverse perspectives from Egypt and Palestine, demonstrating how multilingual skills create meaningful connections.
