Klein Always 'Wanted to Be Here' with Twins
John Klein earned a roster spot after striking out 95 batters with a 3.12 ERA in Double-A Wichita and advancing to Triple-A St. Paul last season.
Ahead of the Rule 5 Draft, the Twins added Klein to their 40-man roster, with MacPhail informing him he is in major-league camp.
After changing his workout and diet, Klein recorded higher velocities at MASH baseball facility in Savage, Minn., adding 20 to 25 pounds and reaching the mid-90s, he said.
At Double-A Wichita, Klein posted a 3.12 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings and earned an August promotion to Triple-A St. Paul.
Derek Shelton said the Twins are building Klein as a starter, though his role remains fluid, with bullpen competition, including non-roster invitee Merryweather, remaining strong in camp.
While speaking to children at the MASH baseball facility in Savage, Minn., John Klein got seven missed calls from Drew MacPhail and said seeing his name on a Twins jersey fulfilled a lifelong goal.
