Minnesota met its goal of getting bigger with the addition of 7-2 Michigan transfer Malick Kordel
The 7-foot-2 transfer gives the Gophers two seasons of eligibility and more size after an injury-hit debut season for coach Niko Medved.
Minnesota added 7-foot-2, 275-pound center Malick Kordel from Michigan to bolster frontcourt depth, with the transfer joining the Gophers with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Originally from Germany, Kordel transitioned from handball to basketball during the pandemic and spent last season at Michigan, practicing against NBA-bound players seeking increased playing time.
In practice sessions, Kordel regularly faced 7-3 Aday Mara, now with the Oklahoma City Thunder, while Gophers sophomore guard Kai Shinholster noted the team is learning to throw lobs to the new target.
Head coach Niko Medved stated the team needed to get more physical, saying Kordel has "worked really, really hard" and expects the center to have an impact this season.
The Gophers open their season on Monday against North Dakota, with Kordel and 6-11 freshman Chadrack Mpoyi joining returners Jaylen Crocker-Johnson and Grayson Grove to address frontcourt depth needs.
