Ministers accused of putting ‘obstacles’ in way of truth over Mandelson files
On Tuesday, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Darren Jones announced the second tranche of Lord Peter Mandelson's files will not be published until June to allow Parliament sufficient time to review the material.
Parliament previously ordered the release of these files, with sensitive material passed to the Intelligence and Security Committee ; Sir Jeremy Wright accused the Government of withholding information for reasons "not specifically permitted in the humble address."
Jones defended the redactions as the "normal approach" to protect junior officials' contact details, insisting the only withheld material is "raw data" obtained during security vetting interviews.
Dame Emily Thornberry expressed disappointment with the redactions, while Tory frontbencher Neil O'Brien claimed the process "completely undermines what this House agreed," accusing the Government of a "cover up."
Critics argue the Government is placing "obstacles" in the way of truth, while the ISC has raised concerns that security advice is being overruled, suggesting the practice needs to change.
