Minister says B.C. government won’t buy Whitecaps, but will help MLS team cut costs
The province says the club uses BC Place at no cost and could receive another year of relief as relocation talks continue.
- On Tuesday, British Columbia Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon confirmed the government will not buy the Vancouver Whitecaps, though it is assisting the Major League Soccer team in reducing costs to keep them in Vancouver.
- The Athletic reported Monday that Major League Soccer is exploring relocating the Whitecaps, identifying Las Vegas as the top candidate, as the club struggles to find a local buyer after 16 months of searching.
- Citing well-documented challenges with stadium access and revenue, the team stated no "viable offer has emerged that would keep the club here" despite "serious conversations" with more than 100 parties.
- The province, through the Crown corporation PavCo, signed a one-year lease this year returning about $1 million in hosting revenue to the club, Kahlon noted, while also aiding with concession and advertising sales.
- As fans advocate to keep the team in Vancouver, Kahlon expressed a willingness to help, stating: "If there are some genuine things that they need done to keep the team here, we want to see that happen.
