Nepal Flash Flood: 165 Bodies Recovered; At Least 300 Indians Still Missing

  • On Wednesday, flash floods wreaked havoc across three districts in Nepal, leaving at least 160 people dead and causing widespread damage in the Rasuwa region. Many families lost homes in the disaster.
  • An avalanche blocked the flow of the Lhende tributary of the Bhotekoshi River near the Nepal-China border, first hitting Timure and triggering the cascading disaster. This blockage initiated the floods across the region.
  • More than 300 Indians are among those missing following the flash flood, according to Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal. At least 50 pilgrims for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra are among the missing Indians.
  • The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and Beijing issued emergency numbers including 1144 to assist affected citizens on Wednesday. Authorities from India and Nepal are coordinating strengthened rescue and relief operations.
  • "Thousands of families have lost homes and are missing as of now," Khanal said. Officials continue working to ascertain the full extent of the disaster as search operations proceed.
