'Minions & Monsters' Tops Fourth of July Holiday Box Office, Barely Beating 'Toy Story 5'
The family film opened with $36 million, far short of the $80 million target, while the superhero sequel fell to $9.6 million in its second weekend.
Despite leading the domestic box office over the Fourth of July holiday, Universal Studios and Illumination's "Minions & Monsters" opened significantly below projections with $36 million from Friday to Monday.
Initial sales mark the franchise's lowest opening, falling well short of the $80 million goal industry observers had set for the five-day holiday frame.
International markets offer stronger returns; the $85 million production earned $86 million overseas this weekend, bringing the worldwide total to $159.8 million.
Elsewhere, Warner Bros. and DC Studios' "Supergirl" endured a steep 74% decline in its second weekend, collecting $9.6 million from 3,602 screens.
Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5" added $31 million in its fifth weekend, while Angel Studios' "Young Washington" opened with $20.8 million in third place.
