Nigeria: NLC to Push for New Minimum Wage, National Minimum Pension
The labour union said retirees need a pension floor and urged workers and pensioners to prepare for a national wage campaign.
- The NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero announced a national campaign to review the minimum wage and establish a national minimum pension for retirees during the commissioning of the Comrade Godwin Abumisi Pensioners Legacy House in Abuja.
- Ajaero cited the rising cost of living, coupled with increasing prices of food, healthcare, and transportation, as factors pushing retirees into poverty. He described the situation as a "historical injustice" requiring immediate attention.
- During the commissioning event, Ajaero stressed that the Nigeria Union of Pensioners is a proud affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, making pensioner welfare inseparable from organized labour's broader struggle.
- The NLC will demand immediate payment of all outstanding pension arrears and implementation of a pension regime guaranteeing "every retiree a life of dignity and security," Ajaero added.
- Ajaero urged pensioners to remain united and prepare for ideological and economic battles ahead, describing the Legacy House as a center for mobilization, strategic engagement, and solidarity.
