Minimum age for train drivers to be lowered to 18 amid fears of driver shortfall by 2030
The UK aims to tackle a looming driver shortfall and diversify its rail workforce as 25% of drivers retire by 2030, the Department for Transport said.
- Legislation this week will cut the minimum mainline train driver age from 20 to 18, taking effect on 30 June, the Department for Transport said.
- Data showing a concentrated, ageing workforce prompted the policy shift as around 30% of 24,000 train drivers expect to retire by 2029 and a quarter by 2030, with fewer than 4% under 30.
