Alexander the Great became king of Macedon at 20 in 336 BCE, after his father Philip II was assassinated. He died in Babylon on 10 or 11 June 323 BCE, aged 32. In fewer than thirteen years he destroyed the Persian Empire, took Egypt, reached northwestern India and founded or renamed more than seventy cities. He left no adult heir and no settled succession.
