Mike Minogue says Shawn Oliver will not serve as lieutenant governor following OUI arrest
Minogue says the ticket will continue without a lieutenant governor and cites ballot timing, while his campaign says leaving the post empty would save more than $300,000.
On Sunday, Republican lieutenant governor candidate Shawn Oliver dropped out of the race hours after New Bedford police arrested him following a drunk-driving crash Saturday night.
Authorities allege Oliver sped down Dartmouth Street on Saturday, striking five parked vehicles and flipping his SUV before climbing from the wreckage.
Oliver pleaded not guilty to operating under the influence and other charges during his arraignment Monday, facing negligent operation and speeding allegations from the crash.
Mike Minogue, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, announced Monday that Oliver will not serve as lieutenant governor if the ticket wins, though Oliver's name remains on the ballot.
Massachusetts law provides no replacement mechanism for a lieutenant governor, meaning the office would remain vacant if Minogue wins, as the state has previously functioned without one for extended periods.
