Mike Frisch: Rig a big minnow to catch giant fall walleye
Mike Frisch said big minnows and patience helped the crew catch several large walleyes on fall trips.
Mike Frisch of Fishing the Midwest recently filmed episodes at Leech Lake and Kabetogama Lake in Minnesota, demonstrating techniques for catching big fall walleyes using large minnows.
Utilizing ActiveTarget 2 XL live sonar to locate fish, the crew positioned the boat to pull rigs slowly through areas or make short pitches to holding zones.
Targeting walleyes on mid-depth flats in 10 to 13 feet of water, the team employed slip-sinker livebait rigs with large creek chubs, redtail chubs, or sucker minnows.
Giving fish time to eat is critical, with Frisch noting "KAB" was productive and advising anglers to slide line to a biting fish before the hookset.
Larger bait often attracts bigger fish, confirming that the bigger the minnow, the more chances for a bite when targeting fall walleyes across the Midwest.
