First small boat arrivals in Dover since UK's £662m deal with France
- On Saturday, migrants crossed the English Channel, marking the first small boat arrivals since Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed a three-year agreement with France on Thursday to curb crossings.
- Under the agreement, the Government will pay £501 million to support five police units on French beaches, with an additional £160 million payable if new tactics successfully reduce Channel crossings.
- Following a small boat incident in the Channel, a group of more than a dozen migrants, including women and children, was brought to Dover and into the Border Security Command compound on Saturday.
- The Home Office said the arrangement will see officers "targeting and detaining" migrants on the French coast, aiming to remove hundreds of small boat migrants from beaches every year to prevent water entry.
- Press Association analysis shows more than 6,000 migrants have arrived this year, down 36% compared to the same period last year, providing baseline data for measuring the agreement's effectiveness.
