Microsoft's "Commitment to Windows Quality" Starts with Overhaul of Beta Program
Microsoft is ending gradual feature rollouts in Beta and adding settings toggles so Windows Insiders can choose specific preview features.
- On Friday, Microsoft announced a major simplification of the Windows Insider Program, consolidating four testing channels into two: Experimental and Beta. Microsoft Principal Group Product Manager Alec Oot detailed the changes to streamline the confusing structure.
- As the company admitted, "the channel structure became confusing." Users frequently questioned why they lacked access to announced features due to the previously used Controlled Feature Rollout, which often resulted in unpredictable testing experiences.
- Testers will now gain access to experimental features through a new feature flags page in Settings, eliminating the need for third-party apps like ViVeTool. Microsoft is enabling in-place upgrades to help users switch versions without wiping devices.
- Replacing the Dev and Canary channels, the Experimental Channel now focuses on active development, while the refreshed Beta Channel ends gradual rollouts to provide a more reliable preview of upcoming retail releases.
- For users seeking absolute earliest access, Microsoft introduced a Future Platforms option within the Experimental Channel, "aimed at users who are looking to be at the forefront of platform development." This distinguishes early testers from retail-aligned builds.
