Larry Nassar Among Those Removed From Michigan Sex Offender Registry After Ruling, Prosecutor Says
The purge followed a state Supreme Court ruling that blocked retroactive registration, removing more than 20,000 names from the database, officials said.
On Thursday, October 1, 2026, The Eaton County Prosecutor confirmed that Larry Nassar was removed from the Michigan Sex Offender Registry following a ruling by The Michigan Supreme Court last month.
The Michigan Supreme Court ruled in September that maintaining registry requirements for crimes before July 1, 2011, constitutes unconstitutional retroactive punishment, forcing the state to purge more than 20,000 names.
Although Nassar's convictions occurred after 2011, The Eaton County Prosecutor explained that "his conduct occurred before 2011 despite his convictions coming after," necessitating his removal.
Calling the ruling "deeply concerning," The Eaton County Prosecutor stated the decision removes essential awareness and protection for victims, potentially compromising community safety.
While the effectiveness of sex offender registries "can be debated," The Eaton County Prosecutor argued such policy changes should occur in the legislature, not by court decision.
