Zookeepers at an Indiana Zoo Were Attacked by Wolves During 'Incident' Inside Wolf Enclosure
Two zookeepers were hospitalized after the attack, and officials said the wolf exhibit will stay closed while the incident is reviewed.
On Wednesday, two zookeepers were hospitalized after being attacked by wolves at Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City. Both staff members are in stable condition following the incident.
The attack followed the death of a wolf that passed away from natural causes on Tuesday night, after which staff entered the enclosure to address the loss. Michigan City Parks and Recreation is reviewing the incident.
Firefighters rescued one worker from the enclosure using a ladder after she suffered severe injuries across her body. A second zookeeper, aged 34, sustained a less severe bite wound to the forearm.
Washington Park Zoo remains open to the public, though the main wolf exhibit is closed while staff monitor the animals. Michigan City Parks Superintendent Shannon Eason praised the coordinated emergency response.
Michigan City Fire Department Training Officer William Sonntag reported the most severely injured victim was "alert and conscious but, as you can imagine, in a great amount of pain. Happy to be alive." A formal review by Parks and Recreation Department is ongoing.
