Michelin to Wind Down Operations at Tuscaloosa BFGoodrich Plant, Affecting 1,200 Jobs
Michelin said it will consolidate BFGoodrich production in Indiana as both plants run below capacity and competition rises in off-road tires.
On Thursday, Michelin North America announced it will close its BFGoodrich tire manufacturing plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, by the end of 2028, eliminating approximately 1,200 jobs over the next two years.
Michelin plans to consolidate BFGoodrich production at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, facility, citing structural inefficiencies as both Tuscaloosa and Fort Wayne plants operate well below designed production capacities.
Ending an 80-year manufacturing presence in Tuscaloosa County, the closure represents one of the region's largest industrial workforce reductions in recent years and affects a facility that has served as a regional economic anchor.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox stated the city will coordinate with state and local partners to support affected workers and determine the best path forward for the community.
Operations will gradually wind down over the next two years as Michelin pledges to assist employees with career transitions and explore future uses for the site once manufacturing ceases.
