Mets Designate Veteran Reliever Craig Kimbrel for Assignment
Kimbrel allowed 10 runs in 15 innings, and the Mets said another team could claim him off waivers.
The New York Mets designated relief pitcher Craig Kimbrel for assignment on Friday, May 22, recalling right-handed pitcher Jonah Tong from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.
Kimbrel posted a 6.00 ERA across 14 appearances for New York, while Tong developed in Triple-A Syracuse with a 32.9 percent strikeout rate.
The 37-year-old Kimbrel ranks fifth all-time with 440 career saves, though he allowed 10 runs over 15 innings during his 10th major league stop in Queens.
Calling the decision 'super tough,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza noted Kimbrel was 'very professional,' while other clubs may now consider targeting the nine-time All-Star via waiver claim.
Tong joins the team ahead of the weekend series against the Miami Marlins, providing pitching depth as the Mets navigate a demanding stretch of 16 games in 16 days.
