Mets Call up Former All-Star From Syracuse to Bolster Bullpen
Craig Kimbrel returns to the majors after the Mets bullpen allowed 10 runs in its last three games, and Richard Lovelady was designated for assignment.
The New York Mets called up nine-time All-Star reliever Craig Kimbrel on Saturday, designating lefty Richard Lovelady for assignment to make room on the 26-man roster ahead of hosting the Athletics at Citi Field.
After Mets relievers combined to allow 10 runs over the last three games, the organization hopes Kimbrel can provide a necessary spark to the bullpen during the losing streak.
A nine-time All-Star, Kimbrel ranks second among active pitchers with 440 career saves and joins his 10th team in 17 major league seasons on a $2.5 million guaranteed deal.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Kimbrel will assume a high-leverage role rather than closing, with Devin Williams remaining the team's primary closer. "I won't hesitate," Mendoza added.
Clay Holmes is "feeling better" following Friday's hamstring tightness, Mendoza reported, though Sean Manaea is the leading replacement candidate if Holmes misses his next start.
