Meta settles with teen during trial testing claims social media caused depression, eating disorders
- On Friday, Meta Platforms settled with a teen plaintiff who accused the company of designing Instagram and Facebook to be addictive, causing mental health problems and disordered eating. The settlement means the trial will proceed against Snap Inc. only.
- Thousands of lawsuits allege social media companies designed platforms to addict children, contributing to a youth mental health crisis involving anxiety, depression and suicide. Companies reject claims their platforms were designed to encourage compulsive use.
- Two teens from Illinois and Mississippi claimed they developed compulsive habits using platforms as early as age 9, citing features like autoplay and infinite scroll. Their cases were selected as test trials among thousands of pending lawsuits.
- In August, Meta reached settlements worth up to $18 billion with nearly every state and U.S. territory to resolve lawsuits over platform harm to teens. Earlier this month, a New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay a $25 billion penalty.
- Attorney Emily Jeffcott stated the settlement provided a just resolution for her client, while a Meta spokesperson said, "We will continue to defend ourselves in court," as the trial in Los Angeles continues against Snap Inc.
