Met Office weekend weather forecast for North East as 'Arctic cold snap' sets in

Arctic air following Storm Benjamin will bring below-average temperatures, strong winds, frost, and possible snow on Scottish high ground, warns the Met Office.

  • On Saturday, October 25 the Met Office warned this weekend will deliver the season's first significant cold snap, expected to continue into Sunday, October 26.
  • After Storm Benjamin shifted east, the Met Office downgraded some warnings as cold Arctic air poised to sweep across the UK and push temperatures below average.
  • Strong winds will produce northerly gusts up to 41mph, deepening wind chill with Newcastle no warmer than 4°C on Saturday, October 25; there is a reasonable chance of sleet and snow over the Scottish Highlands and Grampians above 400 metres.
  • Saturday should be the driest day while Sunday starts dry then turns cloudier with rain later, and the Met Office warned frost is possible and urged to `be prepared` for wintry conditions on high ground.
  • Long-Range forecasts show an unsettled end of October and start of November with wetter, windier weather, though the Met Office says there is `no sign of any lasting notable cold`.
