Met Office Red Warning for Extreme 38C Heatwave Extended
Forecasters say temperatures could reach 38C, with schools, transport and health services facing severe disruption as the heatwave continues.
On Thursday, the Met Office extended its red extreme heat warning for central and southern England through Friday, June 26, as temperatures remain exceptionally high across the region.
A 'heat dome' settling over western Europe has driven unprecedented temperatures, provisionally breaking the UK's 1976 June record of 35.6°C for the third time during this heatwave.
Widespread infrastructure disruption persists, with more than 100 schools closing or altering hours while Network Rail warned of 'significant disruption' across England and Wales due to speed restrictions.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the UK Health Security Agency, urged health services to prepare as red alerts indicate a risk to life across the population.
Climate change is fueling more frequent and intense heatwaves, forcing authorities to adapt infrastructure while public warnings advise residents to stay hydrated and avoid the hottest daytime hours between 11am and 3pm.
