Why Mercedes Won't Contest Antonelli's British GP Track Limits Penalty
Mercedes said Antonelli’s damage-related penalty will stand after stewards ruled he left the track without a justifiable reason.
- Mercedes will not contest Andrea Kimi Antonelli's five-second track limits penalty from the British Grand Prix, as the championship leader finished outside the points after the race on Sunday.
- During Sunday's race at Silverstone, a broken wheel shield became lodged in Antonelli's brake duct, severely hindering his ability to turn the Mercedes W17 as he battled handling issues.
- The Stewards handed Antonelli a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits multiple times at Turn 6 on Lap 44, dropping him to 16th in the final classification.
- Mercedes boss Toto Wolff initially suggested the team would explore rescinding the penalty, arguing the mechanical damage was a significant mitigating factor. "In that case, I think the car was fine," Wolff said.
- The result leaves Antonelli with a reduced lead over teammate George Russell, who finished second, while Mercedes returns the damaged car to the factory for detailed inspection and analysis.
