Crowds Gather for Nelson Mandela Statue Unveiling in Glasgow City Centre
The memorial was commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation and is the first public monument to a named Black person in Scotland.
On Friday, October 9, 2026, representatives from the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation unveiled a bronze statue of Nelson Mandela in Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow, exactly 33 years after his 1993 visit to the city.
Glasgow became the first city worldwide to award Mandela the Freedom of the City in 1981 while he remained imprisoned; officials later renamed St George's Place to Nelson Mandela Place in 1986 to protest the apartheid regime.
Designed by sculptor Alan B Herriot, the statue is the first public monument to a named Black person in Scotland, with the £180,000 cost raised entirely through donations from supporters with no public funds.
Glasgow Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren hailed the unveiling as a "celebration of a unique bond" between the city and the former South African President, noting the monument honors Mandela's decades-long struggle for equality.
Brian Filling, chair of the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation, described the statue as a testament to Scotland's solidarity with the South African people, providing a focus for ongoing education against racism and injustice.
