Reports: Likelihood of NFL Replacement Refs Enters New Stage with Background Checks, Physicals
Several replacement officials have cleared background checks as the league prepares training and physical exams before the referees’ contract expires.
- On Wednesday, the NFL began onboarding potential replacement officials as Senior Vice President of Officiating Perry Fewell informed teams in a memo, with the collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Referees Association set to expire May 31.
- The league initiated contingency plans after nearly two years of unsuccessful negotiations with the union. NFLRA executive director Scott Green told The Associated Press, "Those numbers are not accurate," comparing current talks to the 2012 stalemate that triggered a 110-day lockout.
- While the NFL offered a six-year deal with 6.45% annual raises, the NFLRA demands 10% plus $2.5 million for marketing fees. The league also seeks fundamental job structure changes, including increasing the probationary period for new officials from three to five years.
- Several candidates have completed background checks and will soon undergo physical exams, with training sessions beginning next month. Fewell wrote, "Throughout the process we will continue to solicit your feedback on the performance of the potential replacement officials as we finalize the game official roster."
- A meeting last week involving owners including Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones reportedly produced "progress," but it failed to delay contingency plans. Teams will receive a tentative schedule in coming weeks for replacement officials to work OTAs and minicamps starting June 1.
