MedicAlert introducing technology that will allow 911 dispatchers to access records

  • The MedicAlert Canada Foundation will soon launch technology linking members' electronic health records to 911 dispatchers across Canada.
  • This initiative follows Canada's move to implement next generation 911, extended to March 31, 2027, with many services unable to upgrade timely.
  • In 2024, the foundation conducted a trial of the system in Ottawa, during which the software accessed 8,000 records and MedicAlert’s emergency hotline was contacted by first responders 172 times over the course of a year.
  • MedicAlert Canada President Leslie McGill explained that emergency responders gain access to crucial medical information almost instantly, allowing them to be better prepared before arriving at the scene.
  • The project, expected to reach 200 911 centres in three-to-five years, faces challenges such as poor telephone service in northern areas and funding as a non-profit.
