Measles Outbreak Declared in Snohomish County

Three unvaccinated children tested positive after exposure to a contagious family from South Carolina, amid 434 measles cases in that state since October, health officials said.

  • On Thursday, the Snohomish County Health Department declared a measles outbreak after confirming three local cases this week and consulting the Washington State Department of Health.
  • A visiting family that traveled across King and Snohomish counties was infectious from Dec. 27 through Jan. 1, stopping in Everett, Marysville, Mukilteo, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and a nearby car rental facility; the adult had one measles vaccine while the children were unvaccinated.
  • The Snohomish County Health Department listed exposure sites: Jan. 9 at Pathfinder Kindergarten Center and Serene Lake Elementary, and Jan. 13 at Swedish Mill Creek Campus, with measles lingering in the air for up to two hours.
  • Mukilteo School District announced both Serene Lake Elementary School and Pathfinder Kindergarten Center will close Thursday, Jan. 16, and families must monitor symptoms through Jan. 30 while unvaccinated children quarantine.
  • Snohomish County Health Officer Dr. Jeff Lewis warned more measles cases are expected due to prior exposures; he noted the MMR vaccine is safe, offers 97% protection, and urged residents to check vaccination status.
