MSPs Are Sworn in and Elect SNP's Kenneth Gibson as Presiding Officer
Gibson won 74 votes in the final round and pledged to be imaginative and firm in the chair after leaving his SNP affiliation.
On Thursday, SNP MSP Kenny Gibson was elected Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament after winning a three-round vote involving 129 MSPs.
Four candidates contested the role after the 129 MSPs were formally sworn in Thursday morning, following a hustings event on Wednesday to debate the position.
Gibson secured victory in the final round with 74 votes to 54, defeating Clare Haughey after Liam McArthur and Stuart McMillan were eliminated in earlier rounds.
The Presiding Officer role carries a £136,112 salary and requires resigning SNP party affiliation; Clare Adamson and Katy Clark were elected as Deputy Presiding Officers.
Gibson pledged to be 'firm in the chair when necessary' and 'imaginative,' aiming to make the Parliament 'more enjoyable' as members prepare to elect a First Minister next week.
