12 Boats Destroyed After Massive Fire at Yacht Club in Winthrop
Firefighters used foam to contain the blaze after gasoline on the water helped it spread quickly, officials said.
Early Friday, a massive fire destroyed at least 12 high-end vessels at the Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop, Massachusetts, after firefighters responded shortly after 2:30 a.m.
Winthrop Fire Chief Stephen Calandra reported that the blaze spread rapidly due to floating gasoline on the water, while the marina's composite Trex decking burned intensely and complicated containment efforts.
Two vessels broke free from the marina during the incident, drifting toward Point Shirley and Snake Island, while low tide hindered marine unit access and forced coordinated land-based firefighting efforts.
Authorities confirmed no injuries occurred as the vessels were unoccupied; the Coast Guard and environmental police arrived to address fuel-related environmental concerns while crews used foam to extinguish the fire.
Commodore Al Powell of the Cottage Park Yacht Club expressed heartbreak over the losses, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation as crews continue monitoring the scene for flare-ups.
