Massachusetts voters reject bid to repeal recreational marijuana
On Tuesday, November 3, Massachusetts voters will decide Question 8, an initiative that would repeal the state's recreational marijuana legalization and end commercial sales and home cultivation.
Ten years ago, Massachusetts legalized recreational marijuana, creating a $10 billion industry that generated $2 billion in state and local tax revenue and nearly 18,000 jobs.
The Coalition for a Healthy Massachusetts claims legalization harms public safety, while the Massachusetts Cannabis Coalition argues repeal would cost thousands of jobs and harm social equity programs.
If Question 8 passes, the state would prohibit commercial sales and home cultivation while keeping medical marijuana legal and imposing a $100 fine for possession of one to two ounces.
Recent surveys, including one from The Boston Globe, show 71 percent of respondents plan to vote no, though proponents view Massachusetts as a 'training ground' for future repeal efforts.
