European countries report further infections with the West Nile virus – most of them in Italy. Four people have been infected in Germany so far. Invasive mosquito species are driving the spread.
More cases are already known than in the entire previous year. Diseases have also been reported in Germany.
The European Health Authority (ECDC) is recording more and more infections in its own country – not when travelling to the tropics. 1500 of these cases have already been registered throughout Europe this year.
Throughout Europe, people are infecting themselves with the West Nile virus this year without having to travel. Italy, Greece and Spain cite statistics - but Germany is also affected. The number of deaths is already increasing to more than 60.
Since spring, significantly more than 1,500 West Nile cases have been registered in Europe, in which they have been infected in their own country – not abroad. Seven people also infected with the virus in Austria.

Since the spring, nearly 1,600 cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Europe where people were infected domestically. The virus has been detected in sixteen European countries, reports the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
