Marquette seeks to rebound after finally going to the transfer portal for reinforcements
Shaka Smart added two Division I transfers after Marquette’s 12-20 season, while three returning players are expected to anchor the rebuild.
The Marquette Golden Eagles opened their 2026-27 season on Monday against Mercyhurst in Milwaukee, seeking to rebound from a disappointing 12-20 campaign last season.
For the first time since his inaugural season, head coach Shaka Smart utilized the transfer portal to restock his roster, adding former Louisville forward Sananda Fru and former St. Thomas guard Nolan Minessale.
Returning core players Nigel James Jr., Royce Parham, and Adrien Stevens remain central to the team's outlook, with James averaging 16.4 points and 4.9 assists per game as a freshman last season.
A preseason poll of Big East coaches predicts Marquette will finish fourth behind UConn, St. John's, and Villanova, as Smart emphasized, "Our job is to evolve and learn."
Monday's opponent, Mercyhurst, is navigating a three-year reclassification transition after moving to Division I in 2024, leaving the program ineligible for NCAA or NIT tournament play until the 2027-28 season.
