Mariners minor league pitcher Jose Zerpa suspended for 80 games for positive drug test
Seattle Mariners minor league pitcher Jose Zerpa was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Stanozolol under baseball's minor league drug program.
Zerpa, a 21-year-old Venezuelan right-handed pitcher, has a 4-1 record and a 4.70 ERA in 10 relief appearances this year with the Class A Inland Empire team.
He signed a minor league contract with the Mariners in 2023, which included a $10,000 signing bonus.
Jose Zerpa is among several players disciplined this year for drug violations, including Jurickson Profar of the Atlanta Braves.
