NSW's 2027 Australian of the Year Award Recipients Announced
Her marine research and citizen science work earned recognition for advancing whale health studies and engaging communities across Sydney and the NSW coast.
Macquarie University academic Dr Vanessa Pirotta was announced as the NSW Australian of the Year on Wednesday in Sydney, recognized for her innovative marine research and ocean conservation efforts.
Pirotta pioneered drone technology to monitor whale health by collecting samples from blowholes without disturbing marine habitats. "We need to understand our blue backyard better," she said, emphasizing her public engagement commitment.
Other NSW award recipients include Senior Australian of the Year Dr David Cooke OAM and Young Australian of the Year Danny Schouten, whose Community Shark Bite Kits are now installed at more than 350 beaches.
Local Hero award winners Jill Ashley and Paul Ireland founded Shoretrack to support disengaged youth in the Nambucca Valley. National Australia Day Council CEO Carrie Leeson congratulated recipients for taking the "time to make a difference."
State winners will join nominees from other territories for national awards in Canberra on January 25, 2027. Pirotta will represent New South Wales as the state's official nominee for the national honor.
