'Little' Marco Rubio Is Now Eyeing the Moment to Kill Off Communist Rule in Cuba
Rubio blames Cuba's regime for economic failure and says market reforms are needed to end the crisis caused by a U.S. oil blockade, with experts warning oil supplies may run out soon.
- Saturday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio signaled economic reforms could ease U.S. pressure on Havana as the Trump administration's oil blockade since Jan. 3 risks humanitarian collapse.
- Echoing the Venezuela playbook, Washington is using economic pressure to force leadership changes while Cuba's subsidy-dependent model, first supported by the Soviet Union then Hugo Chávez, is now exposed.
- Rubio criticized the Cuban regime, saying `They would much rather be in charge of the country than allow it to prosper` and that the government `doesn't understand basic economics` and alienates foreign investors who `lose money in Cuba` because `they never pay their bills`.
- Meanwhile, Cuban officials signaled willingness for respectful and reciprocal dialogue while insisting they will not negotiate their political system, with no guarantee the government would accept offers.
- Supporters say the reforms are supported by allies of engagement, Cuba's own economists, and former Congressman Joe García, who calls Rubio's plan a 'sensible, prudent, and humane path.
