Cook Political Report shifts 11 House seats away from GOP
The nonpartisan forecaster says tighter polls and heavy campaign spending have made 14 Republican-held districts more competitive before Election Day.
The Cook Political Report shifted 14 U.S. House seats in 10 states toward Democrats on Saturday, occurring 18 days before the November 3 midterm elections and signaling tighter-than-expected races.
Cook analyst Erin Covey noted Republican troubles are 'particularly pronounced in Midwestern red states,' where districts President Donald Trump won by 10 points or more in 2024 are now 'firmly in play.'
In Florida's 25th District, Republicans spent $14 million against Rep. Jared Moskowitz, while in New York's 21st District, Democrat Blake Gendebien leads Republican Anthony Constantino 46 percent to 42 percent.
Republican National Committee Press Secretary Natalie Baldassarre told Newsweek the party remains "laser-focused on winning," pouring resources into battleground districts to boost candidates and protect President Trump's majority.
The GOP currently holds a 218-214 edge in the House, leaving little margin for error as forecasters including Cook and Fox News have made 152 rating changes favoring Democrats since Labor Day.
