HMRC Issues Warning About State Pension Mistake Millions Have Already Made

- A survey of 5,206 people commissioned by HMRC and Censuswide between February 27 and March 12, 2026, found the most common reason for delaying checks was believing retirement too far away , while 24% feared losing track of pension pots.
- Those aged 45 to 54 are particularly unlikely to have checked their State Pension status, despite this being a critical retirement planning period; 17% of respondents said they only think about pensions at major financial moments.
- The HMRC app allows users to check their State Pension forecast, view National Insurance records, and identify gaps in contributions. Eligible users can also make voluntary contributions to boost their future entitlement.
- Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Chief Customer Officer, said "It's never too early, or too late, to check your State Pension forecast," adding that checking takes just minutes but can make a real difference to future retirement preparedness.
