Man's Tesla video leads to acquittal, police officer's resignation
Tesla video contradicted police claims and led to an acquittal, while the officer resigned amid an internal investigation, officials said.
A Florida man was acquitted of reckless driving charges after video recorded by a Tesla camera proved he did not see the officer following him, contradicting the officer's fleeing narrative.
Officer Erik Schwartz had accused Finley of fleeing and claimed he "lost traction and fish-tailed," then detained him in handcuffs for 33 minutes after ordering him to "turn around, get on your knees."
On Tuesday, Winter Springs Police Chief Matthew Tracht announced that Officer Schwartz is no longer employed and wrote the conduct "did not meet the standards and expectations" for the department.
Finley expressed skepticism about the apology, telling WESH the resignation is a "first step" toward accountability while asserting charges "should have never been filed."
Following his acquittal, Finley plans to initiate a civil lawsuit against the Winter Springs Police Department, stating "I feel like the community is a lot safer now" after the officer's departure.
