Manitoba could have commissioner enforce planned social media ban for kids: Kinew
Premier Wab Kinew says a regulator could enforce the proposal with steep fines as Manitoba weighs wider rules on tech companies.
On Wednesday, Premier Wab Kinew announced Manitoba intends to appoint a commissioner to enforce a proposed ban on social media and artificial intelligence chatbots for children under 16.
Kinew cited concerns over algorithms tailoring content to children as an "unfair business practice," following a recent arrest of an Ohio man luring a 10-year-old Manitoba girl via Snapchat.
Tory Leader Obby Khan criticized the proposal, claiming Kinew "wants to get out of the gate, steal the limelight, pretend like he has a plan," while drafting legislation could take until next year.
Kinew expressed willingness to collaborate with Ottawa and Federal Culture Minister Marc Miller, maintaining Manitoba has jurisdiction over consumer protection despite challenges verifying user ages or locations.
The premier plans to pressure technology companies to include child protections in service terms or face steep fines, with the legislature set to break in less than three weeks.
