Foden hat-trick helps City to ease past AEK Athens
Foden’s first Champions League hat-trick helped Manchester City rebound from defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and keep pace in the group stage.
Manchester City defeated AEK Athens 5-1 on Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick to reignite their European campaign.
A well-below capacity crowd attended the match, with swathes of empty rows visible inside the newly-expanded 61,000-seater Etihad as fans stayed away from the Champions League clash.
Elliot Anderson and Rayan Cherki also scored for City, though AEK briefly cut the deficit to 2-1 through Stavros Palios after 52 minutes before the hosts reasserted control.
Manager Enzo Maresca's side bounced back from their recent defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, reinforcing their position at the top of the Premier League standings.
Leading scorer Erling Haaland was rested following an injury scare, while midfielder Rayan Cherki has returned to form in recent days after a frustrating start to the season.
