British man’s incredible 28-year quest to walk around the world as he arrives back in UK
Bushby covered 50,000km across 29 countries and plans to finish at his mother’s house in Hull next month.
On Monday, October 5, British adventurer Karl Bushby arrived at Shakespeare beach in Dover after swimming the English Channel, completing the final major hurdle of his 28-year global trek.
The 57-year-old former paratrooper set off from Chile on November 1, 1998, with self-imposed rules barring transport use and requiring his return to Hull to complete the Goliath Expedition.
Forced to swim after Channel Tunnel bosses vetoed his request for access, Bushby completed the crossing with no training, spending 20 hours in the water over three days battling strong winds.
Bushby was welcomed to shore by family on Tuesday, where he said "feels good to have UK soil under my feet" with about 400km remaining to reach his childhood home.
Resuming his trek this Friday, Bushby aims to reach Hull by early next month, concluding the journey he initially expected to take only 12 years when departing in 1998.
