Man Shot Dead by Police After Crash Had Firearms Offences on His Record
A critical incident team is investigating after officers said the man aimed a rifle at them and died at the scene despite CPR.
On Sunday, police fatally shot a 45-year-old man near Rugby, a town 84 kilometres north of Yass, after he crashed a Chrysler station wagon into a tree and allegedly pointed a loaded rifle at responding officers.
Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty said the man was known to police for past firearm offences and appeared unresponsive in the vehicle before allegedly threatening officers with the weapon as they approached to render aid.
About six officers witnessed the "traumatic" incident, Hegarty said, noting they attempted CPR after the shooting; while paramedics also tried to resuscitate the man, he died at the scene and no police officers were injured.
A critical incident investigation led by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad is now underway, with an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
Police are expected to provide further information on Monday morning regarding the circumstances of the crash and the fatal shooting, as Hegarty said police will continue to monitor the welfare of the officers involved.
