Man punched Jewish woman in the face as she pushed baby in pram, court hears
Police say the suspect was detained by a Jewish neighbourhood watch group after three Orthodox Jewish women suffered minor injuries.
Abdisamad Siad, 33, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Wednesday facing three counts of assault by beating following an incident on Monday in Stamford Hill involving three Jewish women.
On Monday at Clapton Common, prosecutor Shubhangi Mitra told the court a first victim reported being "slapped across the face" at around 1.30pm. The defendant allegedly punched a second woman pushing a baby in a pram.
Shortly after, the defendant allegedly punched a third victim "three to four times" before running away. Volunteer Jewish neighbourhood watch group Shomrim detained the suspect after the assaults.
Siad entered not guilty pleas to the assault charges and was remanded in custody. He also faces a separate grievous bodily harm charge over an unrelated attack in Islington on October 16.
The court scheduled a provisional trial for December 11 at Stratford Magistrates' Court. The Metropolitan Police increased patrols in the area and urged anyone with information to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers.
