Man Who Punched and Strangled Female Police Officers at Hotel Jailed
The officers feared for their lives after Butler strangled one and punched the other during a call about hotel damage, court heard.
On Thursday, Ipswich Crown Court sentenced Xander Butler, 23, of Willoughby Road, Ipswich, to 16 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation, assault of an emergency worker, and criminal damage at a Capel St Mary hotel.
Police arrived at the Capel hotel on July 29 responding to reports of damage, where Butler rushed at one officer, threw her against a wall and choked her, then punched a second officer who intervened.
Both officers suffered injuries including facial swelling and bruising. One officer wrote, 'I genuinely feared for my life,' after being forced to watch her colleague assaulted while facing the attacker herself.
Superintendent Tom Pearse praised the officers' bravery and resilience, while Sergeant Alasdair Nicol called the incident 'one of the worst assaults on police officers I have seen,' reflecting the extreme violence responders face.
Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore called the behavior 'utterly disgraceful,' while Suffolk Constabulary stated they will continue pursuing offenders to ensure justice for officers facing unacceptable levels of violence.
