Man in court over incidents linked to officer being hit by stolen police car in Downpatrick
Kieran Turley was denied bail after a police officer was seriously injured when a stolen car struck him during the pursuit, police said.
On Monday, Kieran Turley appeared before Downpatrick Magistrates Court charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and using a vehicle without insurance. District Judge Peter Magill denied bail and remanded the 27-year-old in custody until June 25.
The pursuit began Sunday at about 04:45 BST after a Jetta failed to stop for police in Fountain Street. Officers later located the vehicle in Ballymote Walk and pursued the suspect on foot toward Colmcille Road.
As officers returned to their police car, an officer fired one round before being struck by the stolen vehicle. Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones called it an "extremely serious and reckless incident," and the officer sustained serious injuries.
Police Ombudsman Office investigators, led by director Nikki Davis, are gathering evidence to assess circumstances. A 36-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder, and a 27-year-old woman faces dangerous driving charges.
Turley's legal representative argued no-one witnessed him driving the Jetta, though police found him nearby with vehicle keys. A detective constable stated officers cannot "100%" confirm who was driving, noting investigations into multiple offences continue.
